Starrett Dial Calipers in Fitted Case - 4 in
One of the handiest measuring tools available. No veneer scales to interpolate, it is easy to read, reliable, and accurate. A quality tool with parts support, it should last a lifetime.
There are many occasions where measurements to within a couple of thousandths of an inch is helpful in the woodworking shop. Thicknessing lumber with a planer is a good example. Unless you like sanding, the more accurate the final thickness, the easier it is to glue up and dress panels. Set the calipers to the desired thickness, lock the calipers and use them as a go - no go gauge to determine when you've reached the correct thickness.
