Shapton Glass Diamond Lapping Plate
Shapton Glass Diamond Lapping Plates are suitable for flattening waterstones from 500 to 30,000 grit. The surface of the Glass Diamond Lapping Plate is flat to plus or minus 2.5 microns (1 micron = .000040 in.). Shapton beds 270/325 grit (54/45 micron) diamonds in glass to create a balanced finish fine enough to achieve excellent cutting results with just enough coarseness to prevent loading.
Unlike most waterstone flattening systems, the Shapton Glass Diamond Lapping Plate can be used without creating a mess or needing running water. It typically requires only a few passes to flatten a GlassStone and any run-off is easily contained in a Sharpening Pond.
The top image on the left should bring up a picture in a separate browser window which shows the flattening process (you may need to disable the pop-up blocker in your browser to see it).
Here's how it works:
- Step 1: With a pencil, place some lines on the waterstone in a cross-hatch pattern
- Step 2. Spray the surface of the waterstone liberally with water
- Step 3: Rub the Glass Diamond Lapping Plate across the waterstone as shown in the photo
- Step 4: Stop to check your progress. When the cross-hatch pattern is gone - you're done!
- It's not necessary to clean the Shapton Glass Diamond Lapping Plate after every use. When needed, cleaning with a vegetable brush under running water will easily remove swarf from the depressions in the plate
