Block Planes are a versatile group of tools that have the blade bedded bevel up. The blade is supported as close to the cutting edge as possible, minimizing chatter. These planes are useful for all sorts of trimming jobs, especially on end grain, but the larger block planes with thick blades rival Bench Planes on difficult grained woods.
The two most popular of the Lie-Nielsen block planes are the Low Angle Block Plane, and the Low Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Plane. These planes are favored for their versatility because the low angle bedding of the blade enables them to be used on end grain as well as face grain. Easily adjusted and sharpened, they are excellent candidates for gifts to aspiring woodworkers.
