Scraping planes are perfect for finishing woods that do not yield well to the hand plane. A scraping plane is more comfortable to use than a hand scraper, and a plane body helps you keep the surface you are scraping flat.

While the appearance is somewhat different, Spokeshaves are really planes designed specifically for working edges which have an inside or outside radius or curve. Flat bottomed spokeshaves work well for most jobs except on tight inside curves which call for a curved sole.
